Withania somnifera ( Ashwagandha ) root Extract:

Withania somnifera or Ashwagandha, is a widely used herb in Ayurvedic medicines. The berries, leaves and root of this short herb have versatile medicinal values. In Sanskrit, it is known by the name Ashwagandha, which means the odor of a horse. It is named so because of the odor of horse sweat that the roots seem to emanate.

The purification of Ashwangandha roots and the extraction processes are carried out under expert supervision using traditional methods laid down in ancient Ayurveda texts. Ashwagandha Extract is used as antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, antidepressant, relieving stress, increasing blood production, etc.

Ashwagandha is applied to the skin for treating wounds, backache, sciatica and one-sided paralysis (hemiplegia). Ashwagandha contains chemicals that might help to calm the brain, reduce swelling (inflammation), lower blood pressure, relaxes blood vessels and stimulates circulation, has tonic effect in rheumatic and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and alter the immune system.

Withania somnifera or Ashwagandha is often touted as the Indian version of ginseng because like ginseng, Ashwagandha is revered as a non-specific tonic and Adaptogen. Adaptogens are important in cases of ongoing, chronic stress. Ashwagandha root rejuvenates without being over stimulating, it also acts as a mild sedative, and as indicated by its botanical name somnifera, it promotes restful, deep sleep.

One of the chemically active ingredients found in the leaves of ashwagandha is withanolides. These phytochemical appear to have a steroid like effect, meaning that they indirectly increase activity of steroidal hormones like testosterone and progesterone. Because of testosterone's effect on sex drive, this could be what is behind ashwagandha's purported aphrodisiac effects. Withanolide D has shown antibiotic and antitumor activities as well.
